Much of this is absorbed by the oceans thereby increasing sea temperatures and leading to shrinking polar ice caps and rising sea levels. Since the Industrial Revolution, emissions from human activities have sharply increased CO2 levels. As a large part of this CO2 is absorbed by seawater, the oceans are becoming more acidic. The energy transition pathway refers to the planned shift in global energy supply from fossil fuels to CO2-neutral energy sources by 2050. The primary aim is to reduce CO2 emissions in order to limit climate change.2
