Our history

Allianz Global Investors was established as a dedicated asset management business in 1998. Since then, we’ve grown into one of the world’s leading active asset managers. Our focus on clients – whom we consider our investment partners – has been the guiding principle throughout the major phases of our history.

Allianz Global Investors today

Promising beginnings

In 1998, insurance company Allianz Group founded Allianz Asset Management, with assets under management of €23 billion.

1998

Pioneering sustainable investing

We extended our environmental, social and governance (ESG1) capabilities in 1999 –including the ongoing integration of ESG factors across all our mainstream strategies. This year also saw the creation of AGIF vehicle2.

1999

Exponential growth

Between 2000 and 2001, we acquired Dresdner Bank and PIMCO Group, including Dresdner Asset Management Group, Dresdner RCM Global Investors incorporating NFJ Investment Group and Oppenheimer Capital, and Nicholas-Applegate Capital Management into the asset management business.

Customised client relationships

In 2003, we launched risklab3 – an advisory service driven by our collaborative global data experts, offering advisory solutions customised to individual client needs.

Shaping a unified business

In 2004, the asset management business of Dresdner Asset Management Group, Dresdner RCM Global Investors and the Allianz Group adopted the Allianz Global Investors name. The rebranding emphasisedthe shared nature of the company’s strength, values and heritage across all it’s entities.

Growth in new markets

The Allianz China A-Shares Fund launched in 2009, accessing previously untapped opportunities.

A structure shaped around client need

To meet emerging demand for more holistic solutions, in 2011 we redefined our operations into two separate asset management businesses – Allianz Global Investors and PIMCO, both owned by Allianz, replacing the original multi-boutique structure.

Global efficiency

In 2012, Allianz Global Investors Europe started the “One firm initiative”, where siloed operations were merged, and the business became truly global. We also developed the Infrastructure debt platform in 2012.

Growth across Asia

In 2015, we amalgamated previously disparate entities in Hong Kong to operate as one legal organisation – Allianz Global Investors Asia Pacific Limited.

2015

Extending our expertise

Allianz Capital Partners joined the firm in 2018, further extending our expertise in private markets and renewables. We also acquired Rogge Global Partners to grow global fixed income money management capabilities.

New connections

In 2022, we acquired RHB Asset management Indonesia, and a new strategic partnership with Voya IM4 commences in the US.

2022

A landmark launch

2023 saw the launch of the first AllianzGI-Voya fund, signalling the start of a new chapter for US operations.

Building for the future

In 2024, we received Fund Management Company (FMC) approval in China, underscoring our commitment to the mainland Chinese market, and providing onshore investors with access to our global investment expertise.

AllianzGI has established strong, fast-growing alternatives alongside its equity, fixed income and multi-asset capabilities.

Client-focused by design

In 2011, following a shift in client demand towards more holistic solutions, two separate asset management businesses – Allianz Global Investors and PIMCO, both owned by Allianz – emerged out of the previous multi-boutique structure.

2004

One business. One name.

The combined asset management business of Dresdner Asset Management Group, Dresdner RCM Global Investors and the Allianz Group adopted the Allianz Global Investors name in 2004.

2001

Acquisition of Dresdner Bank and PIMCO Group

Allianz acquired Dresdner Bank in 2001, bringing Dresdner Asset Management Group, including Dresdner RCM Global Investors, into the asset management business.

The acquisition of the PIMCO Group, incorporating NFJ Investment Group and Oppenheimer Capital, took place in 2000 and was followed by the acquisition of Nicholas-Applegate Capital Management in 2001.
